J’adore — the scent of success

It’s hard to think of Dior without thinking of Galliano. Between his takeover of the label in 1996 to his departure in 2011, he shaped the brand like no other, producing some of the most famous runway looks in modern fashion. One of his most iconic designs, though, might be most recognisable off the runway.

The first bottle for Dior’s ‘J’adore’ perfume was modelled on the 1949 cyclone dress (designed by Monsieur Dior himself) but it wasn’t until the late 90s that the J’adore fragrance really took off. The iconic bottle takes after the gold bracelets and choker worn by Yasmeen Ghauri at Dior s/s 98. The gold choker can be seen again and again throughout Galliano’s time at Dior, and has been noticeably missing since.

With a name that comes from Galliano’s initial inability to speak French — he supposedly just said “j’adore” whenever he liked a design — the perfume might just be Galliano’s biggest impact on Dior. With a new iteration of the bottle having just been introduced, it looks like a legacy that’s set to continue.
