Moschino is a brand which is innately theatrical, making fun of the fashion world and refusing to take itself seriously. From McDonald’s inspired collections to puppet runways, creative director Jeremy Scott has ensured that the label has never been one to fit in.

This resort 2022 collection is no different, plunging the brand into a world of 1950s tailoring, bright colours and fast food that could only have been inspired by movies and musicals.

“[Musicals] are infectious,” Scott said when discussing the collection, “They make you want to get up and dance and sing along, and that’s why it’s such a perfect vehicle for me to show my resort collection. That’s the spirit I always want for people: to lose their inhibitions, kick up their heels, and have fun.”

Musicals have definitely infected this collection, which harks back to a glossy 1950s memory of Hollywood. Red and white striped zoot suits for both men and women, complete with spat-style shoes and matching fedoras ensure that the collection is anything but subtle, and high school cardigans in pink and yellow root it to the era.

Moschino might also be referencing its own past though, as well as this imagined one. The burger skirt, hat, and earrings are undeniably reminiscent of Katy Perry’s 2019 Met Gala after party look, which the brand styled. While the, still burger themed, two-piece Chanel-esque suit, feels very much like an extension of their McDonald’s inspired Fall 2014 Ready-to-Wear.

“It’s enthusiastic, it’s genuine, it’s pure.” Scott says, and it’s hard to look at the pinball dress adorned with actual pinballs and disagree. The collection certainly is fun. From blue sequined suits to jukebox bags and an unmissable fried egg dress, Moschino is screaming musicals and fast food. Grease, it really seems, is the word.
